Mission and History

Mission Statement

The mission of York Symphony Orchestra is to provide live orchestral music to the people of South Central Pennsylvania and Northern Maryland.

Formed in 1933, the York Symphony has performed without interruption since the Depression, through World War II, and continues today. Our York Symphony Chorus was formed in the 1950’s and continues to sing with the YSO in concerts each season, as well as performing on their own. Up to Eighty musicians take the stage for each of the YSO’s concerts. Many of these outstanding musicians are your neighbors, friends and colleagues

Each season there are classical subscription concerts and a variety of other concerts including a Saturday Family concert, Pops Concerts,  and 2 Young Person Concerts. There is a variety of music to please everyone.

World renowned guest artists join the YSO in the Masterworks Concerts every year. Numerous volunteers support the work of the YSO which reaches more than 60,000 people each year by performing a broad repertoire of classical and contemporary music.

The YSO supports educational programs for grades K-12. In the last four years, the YSO has reached more than 15,000 students each year. In the last two years, the YSO has been involved in 23 educational events. As part of our Guest Artists contracts, special in school residency programs are arranged.

We appreciate your continued support and look forward to exciting seasons to come!
