75th Season Opens!
What a sensational start to our Diamond Anniversary! On Opening Night, over 120 guests attended a lavish celebration of 75 years of symphonic music in York and 25 years of that with Dr. Baker. The atmosphere was festive, the food was elegant and the company was great. The Yorktowne kitchen and service staff outdid themselves for this very special evening. Dr. Baker’s remarks were most appropriate and, as usual, his description of the concert had us all eagerly awaiting the music! And the concert was just as special as the Gala. Our concert opened with a bugle fanfare from the Dress Circle followed immediately by the National Anthem. Joining the orchestra for this special opening was Harold Quickel who played with the YSO on opening night in 1933. Christopher O’Riley was eagerly welcomed back to the YSO by a near full house of concert-goers and his performance was spectacular. The concert opened with Auber’s The Crown Diamonds Overture, especially chosen for our diamond anniversary. The orchestra sounded superb. Mr. O’Riley performed Ravel’s Piano Concerto in G and Messiaen’s Reveil des oiseaux - something new for York. His playing and presence is exciting. And the concluding piece, Delibes’ Sylvia Ballet Suite brought our YSO history front and center, as this piece was the crowd’s favorite at the YSO’s inaugural concert on April 18, 1933. A special presentation to Dr. Baker from the orchestra was made by Assistant Concertmaster Norman Nunamaker to recognize Bob’s 25 years as Music Director of the YSO. Special thanks to M&T Bank for sponsoring this first concert of our 75th season. And thanks to all of our YSO subscribers, patrons, sponsors and all of our YSO family for your unceasing support by giving of your time, talent and treasures to ensure that the music continues to play in York PA.
